Huawei beats Xiaomi, Samsung and Oppo with the Mate X3, the world’s thinnest folding phone
The brand's new foldable barely measures 11.08mm when fully folded. It also comes with a Qualcomm processor and a triple camera of up to 50 megapixels.
The Huawei P60 and P60 Pro have not arrived alone. The Asian company has also announced the Huawei Mate X3, its new folding smartphone ready to battle against the Oppo Find N2, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 with two important assets: its design and its camera.
At first glance, the new Huawei Mate X3 could seem like a mobile with an aspect practically identical to the rest of its competition. It is because it maintains the same format as Oppo’s mobile with a flexible screen, where the interior screen folds and unfolds in a horizontal form. The key to Huawei’s mobile, however, is in its dimensions.
The Mate X3 measures a mere 5.33mm when unfolded and 11.08mm thick when fully folded. It’s considerably thinner than the thickness of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 (15.8mm when fully folded) and also slightly thinner than the Xiaomi Mix Fold 2, which is 11.2mm thick. The Huawei Mate X3 also gains in weight, with 239 grams compared to the 263 grams of the Samsung foldable and the 262 grams of the Xiaomi model.
Despite the small dimensions, Huawei has included a 7.85-inch flexible OLED panel with a resolution of 2,496 x 2,224 pixels and a variable refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. It also has an external screen of 6.4 inches with a Full HD + resolution and a non-adaptive rate of 120 Hz—in addition to a 4,800 mAh battery.
A somewhat limited processor and a camera configuration that does not disappoint
The Huawei Mate X3 has one of the most powerful processors today, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. It comes, yes, with a significant limitation due to US restrictions; It does not have support for 5G networks. The SoC is also accompanied by three internal storage versions, with 256, 512 GB, and up to 1 TB of memory. Huawei has not offered data related to RAM, but it will likely be around 8 or 12 GB.
Regarding the photographic section, the Huawei Mate X3 has a triple camera whose primary sensor is 50 megapixels. A 13-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera accompanies it. Also, a 12-megapixel telephoto sensor can capture photos with 5x optical and up to 50x digital zoom.
Huawei’s foldable also has two 8-megapixel front cameras, one on the outside screen and one on the inside. In any case, it is also possible to use the rear lenses as selfies by activating an option to use the outer screen as a preview mode.
