Motorola Edge 40 Pro, analysis: the spiritual heir of OnePlus

We tested the Motorola Edge 40 Pro, the latest flagship of the brand whose features and price remind us of what OnePlus was in its day.

Motorola Edge 40 Pro backMotorola has been offering smartphones with interesting features at a relatively cheap price for a while. Proof of this is the Motorola Edge 30 Fusion , a model that we at Hipertextual were able to test a few months ago and that is a very interesting alternative to some Xiaomi phones. The best example, however, is the Motorola Edge 40 Pro , the flagship of the brand that has nothing to envy from other high-end devices, which comes with a very differential point: its price.

That is, in fact, the conclusion that I drew after a first very light contact and knowing its main characteristics. And it is, of course, an opinion that can change considerably after testing it in depth; Well, in sections such as the screen, the camera or the battery, factors that go beyond resolution, refresh rate, etc. intervene.

Precisely, one of my biggest doubts with this Motorola Edge 40 Pro , is if the company has cut in any section to be able to offer a price of less than 1,000 euros. Or if, instead, it is simply a strategy to get closer to a market increasingly dominated by Apple, Samsung and Xiaomi. Trying to resolve this question, I have found very interesting details about this smartphone: functions that really stand out from other models, characteristics that are on par with its competition, and some not so good points. Lets start by the beginning.

The best of the Motorola Edge 40 Pro

One of the best features of the Motorola Edge 40 Pro is undoubtedly its screen. It is what most attracts attention when using the smartphone for the first time —more than its design, even— and for different factors. On the one hand, due to its high level of brightness . The Edge 40 pro has a peak of 1,300 nits, which is considerably higher than other smartphones and allows you to view content clearly even in high light conditions, such as outdoors, in full sunlight.

The screen of the new flagship of Motorola also draws attention to its incredible sharpness and clarity ; not so much the interpretation of the colors that, in my opinion, are too saturated. Luckily, the company allows you to adjust the tones and choose more “natural” ones, where with slightly lighter tones.

The refresh rate is another of the most interesting features of the Edge 40 Pro screen: it reaches 165 Hz , but with nuances. Let me explain: the smartphone has a screen with LTPO technology that allows you to automatically adapt the refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz.

In this way, when the panel is displaying something static, such as an image or text, and it does not detect movement, the refresh rate automatically drops to save battery life. If, on the other hand, there is movement, the refresh rate goes up to 120 Hz. LTPO technology, therefore, does not reach 165 Hz, so it is necessary to activate them manually in the system settings, and taking into account that the screen will always work at this frequency, so the battery could be affected. Is it worth turning them on? In my opinion, no, since you hardly perceive the difference between 120 and 165 Hz, but the difference in terms of battery consumption can be important.

Now, how does the screen harm the battery? That of this Edge 40 Pro is 4,600 mAh and, in general, it does a good job, being able to reach the end of the day with 30%. As long as, of course, we adjust the brightness level and choose a screen refresh rate lower than 165 Hz. The Edge 40 Pro, on the other hand, has a 125W fast charge (the charger is included in the box ) and is also compatible with wireless charging.
